Your journey to Turkey One visa, endless memories

A Visit Visa (also called Tourism or Short-Stay Visa) allows foreign nationals to enter Türkiye for tourism, visiting family/friends, short business, or similar non-residential purposes. It is not valid for working, long-term study, or taking up residence.

There are three main routes:

Visa-exempt entry – some nationalities can enter without a visa for a limited duration.

e-Visa – for eligible nationalities who apply online via Türkiye’s official portal.

Sticker Visa / Consular Visa – for those not eligible for visa-exemption or e-Visa; application through Turkish Embassies or Consulates.

Who Needs a Visit Visa & Who Is Exempt

  • Türkiye maintains a list of countries whose nationals are visa-exempt for short visits (touristic, business) up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
  • For those not fully exempt, many can use the e-Visa system. Eligibility depends on nationality and sometimes on holding other visas / residence permits (for example from Schengen, USA, UK, Ireland) for certain nationals.

Examples of variation:

  • Ordinary passport holders from the USA are visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180 days.
  • For some nationalities, even if ordinarily needing a visa, if they hold a valid visa or residence permit from the USA, UK, Schengen, etc., they may be eligible for a single-entry e-Visa for 30 days.

e-Visa: How It Works

If you’re eligible for the e-Visa route, here are the key points:

  • Apply via evisa.gov.tr – the official Government of Türkiye portal.
  • The visa is valid for touristic purposes or short business/trade visits.
  • Passport / travel document must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the period of stay permitted by the visa or e-Visa.
  • Payment by Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay credit/debit card, with “3D Secure” and international transactions allowed.
  • Once approved, you’ll receive the e-Visa via email. You should keep a copy (electronic or printed) and present it at ports of entry. The details on the e-Visa must exactly match your passport/travel document.

Required Documents & Entry Conditions

For both e-Visa or sticker visa / visa-exempt entries, these are typical requirements:

  • Valid passport or travel document. Must usually be valid for at least 60 days after the stay permitted. Some sources recommend sooner (e.g. six months validity) depending on nationality.
  • Passport must have blank pages for entry/exit stamps.
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or address of stay) and travel itinerary (flight/entry & exit details) may be required.
  • Evidence of sufficient means to support yourself during your stay. Bank statements etc.

Duration of Stay & Validity

  • Visa-exempt nationals: typically up to 90 days stay in any 180-day period for tourism/business.
  • e-Visas: duration of stay depends on your nationality; many eligible nationals are granted single entry e-Visa valid for up to 30 days, but in some cases more.
  • Sticker visas via consulates may allow longer stays, multiple entries depending on purpose and country.

Visa Fees & Processing Times

  • The fee for e-Visa depends on your nationality. When you go to apply on evisa.gov.tr, you’ll see the exact fee for your passport type.
  • Payment by accepted cards (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay). Make sure the card is enabled for international transactions and supports 3D Secure.
  • Processing is usually fast for e-Visa (often hours to one day), provided all documents and payment are valid. For consular visa (sticker visa), allow more time (some days to weeks depending on embassy or consulate workload).

Passport Validity & Other Entry Requirements

  • Passport should be valid for at least 60 days beyond your intended stay, but in practice many nationals are advised to have at least 6 months validity.
  • Blank pages required for entry and exit stamps.
  • Upon entry, immigration may ask for proof of accommodation, proof of funds, return or onward ticket.

What Visitors Cannot Do With a Visit Visa / Visa-Exempt Entry

  • You cannot work or engage in paid employment under a tourist / visit visa.
  • Long-term study or residence cannot be done on a visit visa. You’ll need the proper student visa or residence permit.
  • Overstaying beyond the legal duration can lead to fines, deportation, or difficulties with future travel.

Recent Changes & Important Updates (2025)

  • Türkiye has updated its visa regime and lists of visa-exempt countries, so always check the Turkish MFA’s “Visa Information for Foreigners” page for your specific nationality.
  • e-Visa process continues to be improved; payment systems, validity, and requirements may differ slightly depending on your country of citizenship.
  • For U.S. citizens (ordinary passport): as of 2025 they are visa‐exempt for tourism/business up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Application

  • Before travelling, check the official MFA website of Türkiye to confirm your nationality’s current status.
  • Make sure your passport validity and blank pages are in order.
  • Apply for e-Visa (if eligible) well ahead of travel to avoid delays.
  • Keep copies of all documents (passport, accommodation, tickets) both digital and physical.
  • Carry proof of funds or means to support your stay.
