Graduate Trainee Visa (Global Business Mobility) — Overview

The Graduate Trainee Visa lets overseas employees on a structured graduate training programme undertake a UK placement with their same employer’s UK entity. It’s for roles leading to a specialist position or senior management and replaces the former Tier 2 (ICT) Graduate Trainee route. It’s a temporary, non-settlement route.

    Eligibility Criteria

    You must already work for a Home Office-licensed sponsor, hold a valid CoS, have worked outside the UK for that sponsor for at least 3 months, and meet role/salary rules.

    Key Points:

    Employed by an approved sponsor

    3 months overseas service with that sponsor (immediately before applying)

    Valid CoS for a graduate training programme placement

    Job on the eligible occupations list

    Salary ≥ £27,300 (or higher if the role’s going rate is above this)

    Maintenance funds: usually £1,270 unless exempt

    Points Requirement (Total 60)

    You must score 60 points across sponsorship, skill level and salary.

    Key Points:

    20 pts: Valid Sponsorship (CoS + route criteria)

    20 pts: Skill level RQF 6+ (graduate level)

    20 pts: Salary ≥ £25,410 or 70% of going rate (whichever is higher)

    Sponsorship Requirements

    Your employer must be A-rated, issue a compliant CoS, and evidence a structured graduate programme leading to a specialist/senior role with a genuine UK placement.

    Key Points:

    A-rated sponsor licence required

    CoS must describe the programme and UK placement

    Loss of A-rating can invalidate the application

    Application Process

    Apply online with your CoS, prove identity (app or VAC biometrics), upload documents, and pay fees/surcharges.

    Key Points:

    Apply online (up to 3 months before start date on CoS)

    Prove identity: UK Immigration: ID Check app or VAC biometrics

    Typical decision: ~3 weeks after biometrics/ID

    Priority/super priority may be available (country dependent)

    Costs & Processing Times

    There’s a visa fee plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS); maintenance funds apply unless exempt.

    Key Points:

    Visa fee: £319

    IHS: £1,035 per year of leave

    Maintenance: £1,270 held for 28 days (unless you’re exempt)

    Usual decision times: ~3 weeks after ID/biometrics

    Conditions & What You Can Do

    You can work only in the role on your CoS, study, volunteer, travel, and bring eligible dependants.

    Key Points:

    Allowed: work for sponsor in CoS role, study, volunteer, travel

    Not allowed: most public funds, change jobs, second job, ILR from this route

    Dependants

    Partners and children may accompany you if relationship and financial rules are met; their leave ends when yours does.

    Key Points:

    Who qualifies: spouse/civil/unmarried partner, children under 18.

    Funds: £285 partner, £315 per child (28-day rule), unless exempt/sponsor certifies

    Length of Stay & Repeat Applications

    Leave is the CoS period + 14 days or 12 months (whichever is shorter). No in-country extensions, but you may apply again from overseas later.

    Key Points:

    Max per grant: up to 12 months

    No extension in the UK; can re-apply after leaving the UK

    Overall cap: max 5 years in any 6-year period across GBM/ICT style routes (e.g., Senior/Specialist Worker, Service Supplier, Secondment Worker, UK Expansion Worker, ICT Graduate Trainee/ICT)
