Representative of an Overseas Business Visa

The Representative of an Overseas Business Visa (formerly Sole Representative Visa) allows employees of overseas newspapers, news agencies, or broadcasting organisations to come to the UK on a long-term assignment. It also applies to existing sole representatives already in the UK before the route changed in 2022. Holders can work full-time for their overseas employer, bring dependants, extend their visa, and apply for settlement after five years.

Applicants must be employed by an overseas media company with headquarters outside the UK and be posted to the UK on a full-time, long-term basis. Proof of financial independence and English language ability may be required.

Applicants may need to prove their knowledge of English unless they are from exempt majority-English-speaking countries. Proof can be shown through an approved test or a recognised degree taught in English.

Applications are completed online via Gov.uk. Applicants provide biometric data, upload supporting documents, and wait for a decision before travelling to the UK.

The visa application fee varies depending on whether you apply inside or outside the UK, with additional healthcare surcharge costs.

After the initial 3 years, visa holders can extend for 2 years and apply for ILR after 5 continuous years in the UK, subject to eligibility.

Some visa holders in the UK can switch to this route, provided they meet the employment and assignment requirements. Certain visa types cannot switch and must apply from outside the UK.
