Secondment Worker Visa

lexenlaw.co.uk > Secondment Worker Visa

Secondment Worker Visa (Global Business Mobility) — Overview

The Secondment Worker visa lets an employee of an overseas company come to the UK temporarily to deliver work under a high-value contract that the overseas employer has with a UK sponsor (a different UK organisation). It is part of the GBM routes and does not lead directly to settlement.

Key Points:

For overseas staff seconded to a UK client under a Home Office-approved high-value contract

Requires a UK sponsor and a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)

Temporary route; no direct ILR path

Work limited to the sponsored role only

This is the only GBM route specifically tied to a high-value contract between the overseas employer and a UK organisation, making it highly contract-specific and temporary.

    Eligibility Criteria

You must already work for the overseas company linked to the UK sponsor by a high-value contract, have 12 months’ overseas employment with that company, hold a CoS, and your role must be on the eligible occupations list.

    Key Points:

Employed by an overseas organisation with a qualifying contract with the UK sponsor

12 months employed outside the UK for that organisation

CoS from the UK sponsor (contract approved by the Home Office)

Job on the eligible occupation list

What You Can / Can’t Do

You may work for your UK sponsor in the role on your CoS, study, volunteer, travel, and bring eligible dependants. You cannot access most public funds, take a second job, or change jobs without updating the visa; there is no direct ILR.

    Key Points:

Allowed: sponsored work, study, voluntary work, travel; dependants may join

Not allowed: most public funds, second jobs, job changes without update, ILR from this route

    Costs & Processing Times

Applicants pay a visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), and must meet maintenance unless exempt. Decisions are typically fast, with paid priority options sometimes available.

    Key Points:

    Visa fee: £319

IHS: £1,035 per year of leave

Maintenance: £1,270 for 28 days (unless exempt or sponsor certifies)

Decisions: ~3 weeks (outside UK) / 8 weeks (inside UK)

Priority/Super Priority may be available (location-dependent)

    Length of Stay & Extensions

Initial permission is up to 12 months (or CoS period + 14 days, if shorter). You can extend once by up to 12 months; total on this route is max 2 years. GBM cumulative caps also apply.

    Key Points:

Stay: 12 months (or CoS + 14 days, if shorter)

Extend once by up to 12 months → max 2 years on this route

GBM cap: max 5 years in any 6-year period across GBM/ICT-style routes

    Switching, Extending & Updating

You may switch in-country if eligible (certain visas can’t), extend if still on the same contract with the same sponsor, and must update if your occupation code changes (new CoS required).

    Key Points:

Switching: not allowed from visitor/short-term student/Parent of Child Student/seasonal/domestic worker/bail/out-of-rules

Extending: same sponsor + same contract; within 2-year limit

Updating: change of occupation code → new CoS and application

    Dependants

Partners and children can apply as dependants; their leave ends when yours ends. They must prove relationship and meet financial rules unless exempt.

    Key Points:

Who qualifies: spouse/civil/unmarried partner, children under 18, or over-18 children already as dependants in the UK

Funds (unless exempt): £285 partner, £315 first child, £200 each extra child (held 28 days)

    Settlement Pathways

This route does not lead to ILR. Some applicants later switch into a settlement-leading visa (e.g., Skilled Worker, Innovator Founder, Global Talent, Family) if they become eligible.

    Key Points:

No direct ILR from Secondment Worker

Consider switching later if eligibility changes
